A Chinese telecommunication company, Huawei technologies has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to promote technology literacy and awareness to the government, academic institutions and the general public.
Speaking during the signing of the memorandum at Serena Kampala hotel on Tuesday, ICT Minister Mr John Nasasira said the partnership will be beneficial to the country at large.
“Today marks a continued and more beneficial partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. This MOU is beneficial to Ugandans, government and the general ICT industry in Uganda. Some of the Key components include: both parties to promote ICT literacy and awareness to the government, academic institutions and the general public through workshops to expose public to particular and general technologies. Huawei being an ICT leader with heavy investment in Research and Development, we expect to benefit as the Ministry from this partnership”, Mr Nasasira said.
On his part, Mr Stanley Chyn, the Mnaging Director of Huawei technologies said the company will work with the ministry to bridge the digital divide.
“Huawei intends to provide expertise and knowledge transfer to government, academia and the general public through workshops. We shall also support the ministry in joint events, work with the ministry to bridge the digital divide under the program Seeds for the Future and work together as a partner in regard to technology”, he said.
Huawei has also selected Ten Ugandan ICT talents to take part in the Seeds for the Future training in China from 16th to 30th April, 2016, at the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen China.
The group selected by the government of Uganda was officially unveiled at the opening ceremony of the Huawei Technology Festival at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Tuesday. These are expected to be trained in areas of telecom strategy, ICT industry trends and newest technology and equipment. The Huawei Technology Festival is to exhibit Huawei’s latest technological solutions and industrial trends from 5th to 8th April.
The program that started globally in 2008 was launched to nurture professionals who are urgently needed to drive development of the ICT industry in countries where Huawei operates.
